Männerrechtler fordern, Männerrechtler werden bestätigt – News vom 28. September 2017
New Canadian research says high-school girls are, on average, doing as well as boys in STEM — plus they’re outperforming boys in almost every other sphere.
A large study by David Card and Abigail Payne has found that girls and boys in Grade 12 end up roughly equally prepared to go into science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs.
But girls also excel in the languages, humanities and other subjects, while boys do not.
"The conventional wisdom is that the gender gap is about women and the forces — discrimination, sexism, parenting, aptitudes and choices — that make women less likely to study in STEM fields," says Alex Tabarrok, a high-profile Canadian-American economist who has reviewed the study.
Canadian-American economist Alex Tabarrok notes that men are generally doing well only in so called STEM subjects, while women are doing well in STEM and other fields. But the real reason more males complete STEM degrees, says Tabarrok, of George Mason University, is that, to put it too bluntly, "the only men who are good enough to get into university are men who are good at STEM. Women are good enough to go into non-STEM and STEM fields."
The findings of Card, of the University of California, Berkeley, and Payne, of McMaster University, are consistent with wider concerns about the under-representation of men in higher education and in many sectors of the labour market, says Tabarrok.
"If we accept the results (of Card and Payne), the gender-industry gap is focused on the wrong thing. The real gender gap is that men are having trouble competing everywhere except in STEM," says Tabarrok (who obtained his bachelors at the University of Victoria).
The economist’s counter-intuitive analysis of males and STEM comes on the heels of other recent gender surprises in education and the workplace.
One powerful decades-old gender narrative is finally undergoing closer scrutiny in North America and Europe: The one that says women earn about 80 cents for every dollar made by men.
It turns out the average gap in pay between men and women who do the same jobs is tiny or non-existent, according to the business consulting firm, Korn Ferry.
Männerrechtler sagen das natürlich seit Jahren. Dasselbe gilt für die nächste Meldung.
The federal government’s Committee for Bio-Ethics has ruled against the circumcision of infant boys for reasons other than medical necessity. Its ruling states that bodily integrity is more important than religious faith.
The committee was ruling on a question posed in 2014 by Brussels doctors, who asked whether carrying out ritual circumcision of infant boys was ethically correct. The process is irreversible, has no medical justification in most cases, and is performed on minors unable to give their own permission.
The committee has taken three years to give its ruling, it said, because of the religious and cultural importance of the question.
"We’re dealing with a very difficult question," said Paul Schotsmans of the University of Leuven on behalf of the committee. "On the one hand you have the freedom of religion, which means a parent is allowed to have their son circumcised for religious reasons."
On the other hand, he said, is the child’s right to physical integrity, which is protected by the International Treaty on the Rights of the Child, and in particular its protection from physical injury.
"As circumcision is irreversible and therefore a radical operation, we find the physical integrity of the child takes precedence over the belief system of the parents," the committee chair Marie-Geneviève Pinsart pronounced.
An Oxford University student dubbed "too clever to go to prison" has walked free after stabbing her ex-boyfriend in a drug-fueled frenzy — but moaned that she can’t go clubbing without being recognized.
Following the hearing, Mark Brooks, chairman of the Mankind Initiative, which supports male victims of domestic abuse, said the judge’s comments would make it more difficult for men to come forward for fear of not being taken seriously.
Brooks said: "The judge’s comments are completely unacceptable and out of touch. This is a clear case of severe domestic abuse against a man and the focus and sympathy should be with him."
"The judge seems to think that domestic abuse, when it is committed by a woman against a man, is not as serious as it rightly is when it is the other way round."
"This is wrong. It only serves to reinforce society’s continuing empathy gap between male and female victims and the message the judge sends is that this is right."
"It also makes it harder for men to come forward and get help because many fear not being taken seriously when they do — just because they are a man. This does nothing to change that view."
